Oregon Birding Association- Hawkwatch at Bonney Butte Field Trip to Hood River, County
Trip Leader: Coordinated by Ken Chamberlain with Hawkwatch International Staff.
When: Sunday, September 15, 2019
Where: We will visit the Hawkwatch International – Bonney Butte site on the Mt Hood National Forest. Site Information: http://www.hawkwatch.org/migration/item/81-bonney-butte-hawkwatch
We will meet at 8:00 am at the Government Camp Rest Area parking lot on Hwy 26. Google map: https://goo.gl/maps/CbneU2bLRujS8dx86
Birds and site conditions:
Migrating raptors will be observed from Bonney Butte. With luck we will get close-up looks at raptors captured for banding by HWI.
This trip requires travel coordination. The final 4 miles of the route are fairly rough with many boulders, travel will be slow and cautious. This road segment is best traveled in a higher clearance vehicle. If you do not have a high clearance vehicle we will coordinate vehicle sharing at the meeting spot.
From the end of the road we will walk about a .5 mile walk uphill on a gravel road to the observation site. There is no restroom at the observation site, however there is one located at the base of the hill approximately .25 miles away.
Hawkwatch International bird monitoring activities at the site are weather dependent. Heavy rain or snow will cancel this field trip and require possible rescheduling.
