The Oregon Birding Association is pleased to announce our field trip and workshop line-up for the 2019 Annual Meeting in Portland on June 1-2. The line-up includes all day trips to a wide variety of Portland area birding hotspots. We are especially pleased to offer an outstanding group of field trip leaders who are all well known local and state-wide birding talents.

In addition, our banquet speaker, Nathan Pieplow, will present a workshop “A Shared Vocabulary for Bird Sounds” (this workshop is full).

Registration for the annual meeting and the Nathan Pieplow workshop is currently open.

Registration for the field trips and for the photography workshop will begin on May 13, when everyone who has registered for the annual meeting will receive email notification with a link to the field trip registration page.

Trip Difficulty level descriptions:

  • Easy—flat ground some walking
  • Moderate—walking needed to get to the birding sites, some elevation changes
  • Difficult—fair amount of walking with elevation changes

Field Trips for Saturday June, 1

Field Trip #1 Saturday June, 1 – Sandy River Delta to Larch Mountain

  • Leader:  Colby Neuman
  • Number of participants:  8
  • Meeting Point and Parking: Sandy River Delta parking lot (map)
  • Starting Time: 6:00 am
  • Ending Time: 2:00 pm or earlier
  • Restroom facilities: At Sandy River & possible at Larch Mountain trailhead (closed at this time, scheduled to be opened)
  • Carpooling: Yes, recommended. Return to Sandy River lot at end of trip.
  • Difficulty level: Difficult, 4-6 miles of walking mostly flat

Field Trip #2 Saturday June, 1 – Pittock Mansion & Vanport Wetlands

  • Leaders:  Diana Byrne (Mansion) and Shawneen Finnegan (Vanport)
  • Number of participants:  12
  • Meeting Point and Parking: Pittock Mansion Parking Lot (map)/ West Delta Park off leash area (Vanport wetlands) (map)
  • Starting Time: 7:00 am – Vanport extensions leaves Mansion @ 9:30 am depending on birding.
  • Ending Time: 2pm or earlier
  • Restroom facilities: Pittock Mansion, stop on route to Vanport, no restrooms at Vanport. Carpooling: None
  • Difficulty level: Easy

Field Trip #3 Saturday June, 1 – Mt Tabor & NE PDX area

  • Leaders:  Tom McNamara (Mt Tabor) & Lars Norgren (NE Portland sites)
  • Number of participants:  12
  • Meeting Point and Parking: Mt Tabor Visitor Ctr. Lot (map)
  • Starting Time: 7:00 am, extension leaves Tabor @ 10-30-11:00 am depending on birding.
  • Ending Time:   2:00 pm approx.
  • Restroom facilities: At Mt Tabor and TBD
  • Carpooling: Possible to extension site.
  • Difficulty level: Easy to Moderate, road grades & wide trails in Tabor.

Field Trip #4 Saturday June, 1 – Colombia Slough in North Portland

  • Leaders:  Nick Mrvelj and Zack Schlanger
  • Number of participants:  8
  • Meeting Point and Parking: Kelley Point Park (farthest parking lot near the Columbia River Trailhead) (map)
  • Starting Time: 7:00 am, extension leaves 10-30-11:00 am depending on birding
  • Ending Time:   3:00 pm approx.
  • Restroom facilities: Kelley Point Park
  • Carpooling: Possible from Kelly Point
  • Difficulty level: Moderate 4 miles walking.

  • Difficulty level: Easy to Moderate

WORKSHOP #1: A Shared Vocabulary for Bird Sounds (FULL)

  • Leader:  Nathan Pieplow
  • Number of participants:  25 persons – $50 fee
  • Meeting Point and Parking: in Gymnasium – McMenamins Kennedy School Parking in lot or street nearby. 5736 NE 33rd Ave, Portland, OR 97211

  • Carpooling: Recommended to field exercise (TBD likely at Mt Tabor) then return to Kennedy School
  • Difficulty level: Easy – paved road with grades on Tabor
  • Recommended reading: “Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds of Western North America” by Nathan Pieplow available in bookstores.

WORKSHOP #2 Saturday June, 1: Bird Photography

Field Trip #7 Sunday, June 2 – Wapato Access Greenway and Oak Island on Sauvie Island
